Kenya Association of Physicians (KAP)

In 2024 the College was awarded a UK Government grant to fund a healthcare partnership with the Kenya Association of Physicians (KAP). The project was funded through the Global Health Workforce Programme, financed by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for the benefit of the UK and partner country health sectors. Its aim is to advance universal health coverage by strengthening the health workforce in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.

Kenya has a huge shortage of doctors with around 500 specialists for a population of over 52 million. Our project aimed to improve access to high quality healthcare in rural and urban areas by increasing the capacity to train and certify specialist physicians. This involved targeted online and face-to-face activities: bilateral faculty observation visits timed with PACES and ECSA Part 1 OSCE; a workshop on postgraduate assessment in Eldoret, Kenya for trainee examiners; development of a bespoke online training module on postgraduate assessment; updating of the KAP procedures manual for clinical examinations and a podcast.

As a result, many Kenyan physicians have now been trained in formative and summative assessment, ready to contribute to postgraduate physician training with others trained and ready to contribute to clinical examining.
