Senior examiner roles

Experienced PACES examiners are invited to consider taking up the following two senior exam roles: 

Chair

The Chair of Examiners will have extensive examining experience and will be responsible for briefing examiners, chairing the post cycle meeting, supporting the Host in examination delivery, and the audit and quality control of examination delivery. The Chair examiner will need to ensure the smooth running of the exam and provide leadership.

  • Conduct the examiner briefing meeting.
  • Conduct post-cycle discussion addressing any issues or incident encountered.
  • Review candidate scores will all examiners.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed and returned to the college - ecps marks, centre audit and incident forms, trainee examiner forms and scenario assessment forms.

Host

The Host Examiner is responsible for setting up an exam centre at your local hospital and overseeing the organisation of the exam. The host is responsible for:

  • Securing the exam venue
  • Recruiting patients
  • Sourcing administrative support
  • Writing Consultation Scenarios

The host is also expected to take to carry out the role of 11th examiner and must be prepared to fill in at short notice for an examiner gap.

Vetting

Information for examiners

Examiner Expectations and Commitment

Each time you examine for PACES, please ensure you have read below documents.

Examiners are required to commit to examining a minimum of 6 cycles 2 days (30 candidates) per annum (average over  2 years) i.e. minimum of 2/3 days per year. 

Fair Assessment

Equality and Diversity training for PACES examiners.

This is mandatory for from 2024.3 onwards. Examiners are required to take one module every three years of the bespoke online equality and diversity training created especially for MRCP(UK) PACES examiners. Include link to further details

Continuing Professional Development

Booking Travel and Accommodation

RCPE have appointed The Travel Company Edinburgh (TTCE) as our travel agent to arrange all travel and accommodation bookings required when examining at any of our examination centre(s). All bookings must be approved and booked in advance though the college travel agency TTCE to ensure the best rates and will bill RCPE for any travel and accommodation organised for you.

If you require arrangements for travel and accommodation once your allocation place to examine has been confirmed, please email the TTCE team at: operations@ttce.com.

Responsibilities and duties of PACES Examiners

In addition to the above, when you are corresponding with us, please ensure that your communications with RCPE staff are of a professional nature.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) has a responsibility to ensure that all our staff work in a safe and secure environment, and we are committed to the care and protection of our employees. RCPE will not tolerate any form of abuse, rudeness, or demanding behaviour in person or through email, phone, or any other form of communication. 

Examiner Expenses and Guidelines

You will be able to claim back your expenses incurred during your time examining for PACES using the Examiner Expenses Claim Form below. Please email your completed Examiner Expenses Claim Form along with all receipts to: pacesexpenses@rcpe.ac.uk

Please note: Expenses claims cannot be approved without receipts and all claims should be submitted within 3 months of the examination date.
