Train and work in the UK
As an MTI trainee you will receive specialty training supervised by a qualified NHS consultant. In most instances the training plan is tailored to suit your educational objectives and the work you wish to undertake on returning home.
We will sponsor your GMC registration and sponsor your visa or support the NHS Board/Trust in applying for your visa (whichever visa route is most appropriate for you).
You will receive the same salary as a UK doctor unless you have funding from your home country.
Before we consider accepting an application, you must have:
We sponsor successful applicants’ GMC registration and visa applications but do not offer financial support.
Application fee
A £100 application fee is charged to all applicants. This is a non-refundable application fee payable when we accept an application. We do our best to identify suitable opportunities for all applicants but cannot always guarantee this.
Administration fee
Our administration fees are determined according to economy of the country where you work (as classified by the World Bank(link is external))
Please note the application fee will be deducted from any administration fee charged.
Other costs
The current fee for GMC registration can be found on the GMC website(link is external) alongside guidance on the process. You are responsible for paying these, the fee for the ECFMG check and the visa application fees(link is external), we do not pay them on your behalf. You will also need to pay your costs for travelling to the UK.
We support placements all over the UK. While we can place trainees in most specialties, we cannot always guarantee that a suitable placement will be found in all specialties.
Placements are for a minimum of 12 months up to 2 years, the exact duration depends on the particular placement.
MTI does not lead to Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Upon completion trainees receive a certificate from the College confirming that they have undertaken an International Training Fellowship in the specialty and a letter outlining the competencies they have gained experience in.
If you meet all our essential criteria and wish to apply please send to MTI@rcpe.ac.uk(link sends e-mail):
There is no application deadline as we recruit all year round. Interviews are conducted online with recruiting consultants for a particular post and are not held overseas. You will have to satisfy RCPE that you possess the knowledge, skills and experience required for practising as a fully registered medical practitioner in the UK.
If we progress the next stage is selection by interview. You must submit a formal application and the application fee before an interview is arranged. Further guidance on the formal application will be provided and will require a satisfactory health & probity declaration, references and copies of degree certificates. It is important that you remain in clinical practice throughout the application process.
If a job offer is made following a satisfactory interview then you start your online application for GMC registration(link is external) and send us your reference number. We then submit a Certificate of Professional Sponsorship to the GMC. The GMC also require a satisfactory Certificate of Good Standing from you, obtained within the last 3 months.
If you have already been offered a NHS post please contact us for further details of how we may be able to support your GMC registration and visa application through MTI: mti@rcpe.ac.uk
Successful MTI applications for those from priority countries(link is external) take an average of 6 months from first applying to arrival in the UK. We recommend you contact us 6 months before your intended work date, or 12 months before if you are from a non-priority country.
As an MTI trainee you will receive specialty training in the post under supervision by a qualified NHS consultant. We quality assure posts to ensure that they contain sufficient educational and training content. In most instances the training plan is tailored to suit your educational objectives and the work you wish to undertake on returning home. If you identify opportunities for research, audit or relevant conferences we encourage you to discuss and agree these with your educational supervisor.
On-call duties in general/ acute medicine are often part of the training post and these help maintain NHS services as well as providing you with experience of general medicine in the NHS.
You will undertake a period of local induction and close supervision to become familiar with local practices and protocols until both you and your supervising consultant are satisfied that you are competent and ready before commencing your full role or starting any on-call or night shifts, if this is part of your training post.
We also organise induction sessions on UK practice with the GMC and advertise these to current MTI trainees as appropriate. You will also have access to relevant induction sessions at the Royal College of Physicians of London and we will notify you of these if appropriate.
