Office Bearers
Dr. MaryAnn Ferreux
Chief Medical Officer at Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex
I am a Chief Medical Officer and a Non-Executive Director for two NHS Trusts (community and mental health). I have 20 years clinical experience working across both the Australian and UK health system, with specialist qualifications in health system leadership, management, and population health; I am motivated by a desire to lead clinical transformational across the health and care system. I have held Board level roles as a medical leader in both primary and secondary care and I am passionate about using innovation to improve the patient experience, deliver better integration, and ensure equitable access to care.
I have a special interest in researching health equity and the impact of the social determinants of health to explore the impact of organisational behaviours and policy making on health inequalities in the NHS. From a personal perspective, I identify as a woman from a BAME background with a lived experience, I am passionate about using my position to role-model an inclusive leadership approach whereby I support, mentor and coach, clinicians from disadvantaged backgrounds to widen participation in medicine and increase diversity within healthcare leadership.
As Chair of the EDI committee, we listen to the experiences of our diverse membership, advocate to increase representation in college leadership, and engage members in cultural awareness. It is critical that we address bias and discrimination that exists within health and champion for equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Elected Members
Dr. Edwin Eshun
ST5 trainee in Rehabilitation Medicine, South East Scotland. Honorary Clinical Fellow, University of Edinburgh Medical School
In my current role I have had the opportunity to supervise an SSC project for undergraduate medical students exploring brain injury and other co-morbidities within a cohort of people experiencing homelessness. This work led to a published paper. I hope to use this as a catalyst to undertake a higher degree with reserarch related to disabling conditions. Outside of work I have had the opportunity mentor prospective medical school applicants on the Social Mobility Foundation programme, something I’ve done for the last 5 years.
My interest in EDI is driven by personal experiences, a desire to diversify the profession so it better reflects the diversity of the larger population, and a desire to improve the experience of healthcare and healthcare outcomes for minority and marginalised groups.
Dr. Shivaram Prasad Singh
Retired from SCB Medical College, where I was Head of Gastroenterology for 2 decades. Currently Chairman, Kalinga Gastroenterology Foundation engaged in creating public awareness, conducting CMEs and supporting research in gastroenterology. This group independently organizes Webinars, Symposia and has also published a marvelous book for patients with liver diseases: “FAQs for Liver Diseases”, which is meant for dissemination of knowledge to patients on various GI and liver diseases. The Urdu translation of this book has also been launched in Pakistan.
I aspire to be a catalyst for greater involvement and participation by women in the field of gastroenterology/hepatology in South Asia. I founded SAASL over a decade ago which is spearheading hepatology education and research in South Asia.
Professor Sarah Pett
Professor of Infectious Diseases University College London (UCL), Honorary Consultant Central and NorthWest London NHS Foundation Trust, Visiting Professorial Fellow University of New South Wales
I am a Professor of Infectious Diseases at UCL, based at the MRC CTU at UCL housed in the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology, and at the Institute for Global Health. I trained in the UK at St. Mary's Hospital (now Imperial Healthcare), and subsequently completed my specialist training in infectious diseases and general medicine in Sydney, Australia. After 17 years in Australia I returned to the UK in 2013 to take up my current position at UCL where I lead the Infections Group, as well as my own portfolio of late-phase clinical trials in HIV and other blood viruses and respiratory infections including COVID-19 and influenza. I have a strong commitment to mentoring and Chaired the cross faculty mentoring group, which has subsequently expanded to include all institutes in the Faculty of Population Sciences at UCL, with a remit to ensure mentoring is centre stage in the working of the Faculty staff, now and in the future.
I am truly honoured to be a member of the EDI committee which aims to help nurture and grow members of the College in the career journeys, to ensure they are happy, successful and attain their full potential in medicine and the allied sciences. I am delighted to contribute to this very important endeavour in any way I can, but most especially by sharing my own experiences as both a mentor and mentee.
Dr. Amon Parnaiba
Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry
Ever since I was in medical school, I have been dedicated to working with vulnerable communities. As a physician and later as a psychiatrist, it has always been one of my top priorities: to make a positive impact in people's lives through my work and to help reduce the inequalities that minorities often face.
I am an experienced doctor in General Psychiatry, Substance Misuse Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. Before moving to the UK, I worked for several years with a variety of vulnerable communities (minority ethnic groups, LGBTQIA+, victims of violence, and homeless people, among others) in the Northeast, Southeast and South of Brazil. Throughout my career, I have been consistently working to help reduce inequalities that these vulnerable populations face. Currently, I work as a Specialty Doctor in Adult Psychiatry in the NHS Forth Valley, and I have the honour of being part of the EDI Group to keep embracing the challenge of promoting more inclusive, fair and diverse workplaces to contribute together towards a better society.

Dr. J Kenneth McAlpine
Retired Consultant in Medicine for the Elderly
My lived experience and perspective in working life as well as personal life in relation to aspects of the need for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion nudged me towards participation in this committee. It is increasingly recognised that contributions from multiple and diverse points of view can improve an outcome hence my wish to be involved.
My role and involvement in the College is an opportunity to participate, contribute, learn, develop, explore and share.
Dr. Safirul Haque
Consultant Geriatrician
MRCP PACES Examiner
Member RCP EDI group
Feels very rewarding especially because of my interest in medical education.
Dr. Conor Maguire
Consultant in Medicine of the Elderly, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
I am Conor Maguire, a Consultant Geriatrician in Edinburgh, and the Vice President (International) at RCPE. I have had a keen interest in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the healthcare workforce through my entire career having witnessed, and experienced, discriminatory behaviour towards those with both visible and hidden characteristics.
I have been a member of the RCPE EDI committee since its inception, and am a member of the NHS Lothian LGBTQ+ staff network.
When I was Director of Education at RCPE, I introduced a gender quota for all educational meetings, ensuring that organising committees must aim towards gender equality among speakers and Chairs.
Everyone is entitled to a non-discriminatory approach in their workplace and in their lives, free from harassment, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, age, race or disability.
Professor. Angela Thomas
I have been a Fellow of the College for nearly 30 years and have seen the very slow evolution of membership diversity and opportunity. Momentum is gathering with raised awareness which should facilitate growth in diversity, progress in equality and increased visibility of what has been achieved to encourage people to participate.
I am the Heritage Trustee and Honorary Librarian at the College and worked with the library staff to look at connections with Slavery and Colonialism within the College and chaired the Next Steps committee looking at ways to improve the experience of International Medical Graduates both in the short and the long term.
My aim is to ensure that the College is joined up in its work and achieves an environment where equality and diversity are part of the very core of decisions and strategies for the College. This area is not an ‘add on’ but a ‘fundamental’.
Dr. Munzir Hamid
Medical Oncology Consultant
I am Dr. Munzir Hamid, a Medical Oncology Consultant at University Hospital Cork, Ireland. My passion for becoming a part of the EDI Group arises from my strong dedication to nurturing an inclusive work environment. I firmly believe that every person deserves equal opportunities for success, regardless of their background. It is crucial that we accurately reflect our membership and are a force for change in embracing all the benefits of a diverse membership.
Dr. Gail Kerr
Chief in Rheumatology at Washington DC VAMC, Howard University Educator, and Clinical Researcher. I want to be involved in the EDI group to contribute to objectives and aims of equity and access to care across gender, race and for all affiliates. I promote EDI in my workplace by assuring equity in fellow trainee selections, promoting rheumatology access for ethnic minority residents, clinical research addressing equity in rheumatic diseases.
Dr. Helen Dormand
I am a Deputy Medical Director and Consultant Cardiologist who has trained and worked in NHS Scotland and England. My current NHS role is in North Cumbria. I am also a member of the RCPE Quality Governance Collaborative Faculty and am undertaking a PhD exploring how we apply governance in healthcare, through an intersectional lens.
As a female cardiologist and at times a less than full time trainee/employee, I have first-hand experience of inequality, discrimination and exclusion within healthcare and of challenging those behaviours. In recent years I have become more involved with the College through the Quality Governance Collaborative. In doing so I have found a space in which I am respected and valued as an individual. I applied to be involved with the College's EDI Group with the aim of making RCPE in all of its guises that space for all of its members.
Dr. Adnan Sharif
I am a Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. I studied at the University of Edinburgh between 1997 - 2002 and trained in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Birmingham and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the USA before taking up my Consultant post in 2011.
I have a strong interest in promoting EDI within organisations to ensure opportunities are equal and all individuals feel the same sense of belonging. I have been involved in a Fairness Taskforce across University Hospitals Birmingham for many years, set up to promote diversity and inclusion across the organisation, and we were shortlisted for the ‘Diversity team of the year’ at the recent British Diversity Awards. Some of its achievements include adoption of reciprocal mentoring programs, debiasing of recruitment processes which have resulted in improvements in WDES indicators for the likelihood of disabled staff being appointed from shortlisting, adoption of a Trust anti-racist statement and many more. I hope to bring that experience to the RCPE EDI Group in our efforts to ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion across the College.
Dr. Praveen Kumar
