Examiner Expectations and Commitment

Each time you examine for PACES, please ensure you have read the following documents:

The minimum requirement we ask of examiners is to commit to examining for two days (30 candidates) every two years. Flexible options are available – for example, you may be able to examine over two cycles (8am-3pm) or three cycles (8am-6pm) in a single day.

Experienced PACES examiners are invited to consider taking up the following two senior exam roles:

Chair

The Chair of Examiners is an examiner with Two PACES examiners in conversation whilst looking at clipboards.extensive examining experience who is responsible for briefing examiners, chairing the post cycle meeting, supporting the Host in examination delivery, and the audit and quality control of examination delivery. Read more about the role of Chair of Examiners here

Host

The Host Examiner is responsible for organising the facility and patients for the day. The Host Examiner frequently takes on the role of the  “11th Examiner”, who is responsible for troubleshooting during the examination cycle, collating and checking the marksheets, compiling the Candidate Performance Summaries, collecting the scenario assessment forms and any confidential paperwork (e.g. scenarios). Read more about the role of the Host Examiner here.

For those interested in hosting a PACES centre for the first time, or wish to co-chair, co-host, or otherwise shadow a PACES exam, please email us at: EdinburghExaminers@rcpe.ac.uk.

MRCP(UK) Examiners Code of Conduct

Examiners should also read through and be fully aware of current versions of the following three documents from MRCP(UK):

In addition to the above, when you are corresponding with us, please ensure that your communications with RCPE staff are of a professional nature.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) has a responsibility to ensure that all our staff work in a safe and secure environment, and we are committed to the care and protection of our employees. RCPE will not tolerate any form of abuse, rudeness, or demanding behaviour in person or through email, phone, or any other form of communication.

Fair Assessment

All PACES examiners are required to complete Equality & Diversity (E&D) training before examining their first exam and every three years thereafter.

Fair Assessment is a bespoke online E&D training module created for MRCP(UK). It was developed to ensure that PACES examiners have undergone E&D training specific to their role as assessors in the clinical examination. More details can be found here.

You will need an access code from your College to register for an account. If you would like to request a code or if you have forgotten your code, please email: EdinburghExaminers@rcpe.ac.uk. Once you have this code, you can create and access your MRCP(UK) Fair Assessment account here.
