Dr Mateyo is a consultant respiratory physician at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, a 1,700-bed tertiary-level hospital, where he leads the Respiratory Medicine Unit and serves as the Medical Lead of the Intensive Care Unit. He also holds an honorary lecturer position at the University of Zambia, where he trains, supervises dissertations, and examines undergraduate medical students and Internal Medicine trainees. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since April 29, 2020. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians, where he is also a trainer and examiner.
Dr Mateyo obtained his MBChB from the University of Zambia, subsequently working as a house officer at the University Teaching Hospital, before commencing and completing his residency in Internal Medicine. Two years after completing his residency, he pursued a fellowship in Respiratory Medicine at St. Antonius Ziekenhuis in Nieuwegein, The Netherlands. Afterwards, he returned to Zambia to establish the country’s first specialist respiratory service, with the aim of improving respiratory clinical care, research, and teaching. He is currently a PhD student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His research interests are primarily in pulmonary infections, with a particular focus on novel tuberculosis diagnostics and therapeutics. His PhD research explores the accuracy of lung ultrasound for TB diagnosis and the applicability of AI for this purpose.
