Amy's Marketing Intern blog
After graduating with a degree in Marketing and Finance from the University of Strathclyde, I knew I wanted to spend my summer gaining practical experience before embarking on a gap year backpacking Australia and Asia. The Marketing Internship at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) has been the perfect place for me to put theory into practice, whilst constantly learning from my highly knowledgeable colleagues, and preparing me for future career opportunities.
RCPE Marketing Intern is a dynamic role which offers a wide range of responsibilities. I was fortunate to join RCPE at a very exciting time, with the development of the new RCPE website underway and a main priority over summer. Within my first week, I was given responsibility to create new website pages, and I am now confident in taking the lead on building new sections of the website. I really appreciated that the team were always supportive whilst encouraging me to challenge myself, as I now feel highly confident and have tangible results of my work. I focused on ensuring that design elements and navigation were user-friendly and visually appealing, prioritising the user experience.
Alongside the new website development, one of my other responsibilities included social media content creation and scheduling. I found this to be a particularly interesting responsibility at RCPE as there is the opportunity to promote internal events as a working College for physicians, such as specialty symposiums and EMUs, as well as a venue for external hire for events, such as weddings, conferences, and balls. The variety in marketing for these two different sides of the College allowed me to really consider how tone of voice, visuals, and platforms must change as the marketing goals change. Previously inexperienced to social media scheduling, I am now able to effectively use Meltwater to schedule an array of content.
Below you can see examples of content I've posted to the RCPE venue account, such as wedding imagery and this instagram reel. The second image shows content I created for the RCPE education account which included x2 months captions.
Some of my other responsibilities included HTML creation and scheduling, digital campaigns analysis and reporting, both video and print media creation and extensive data collection. Overall, my internship has taught me about various areas of marketing through a hands-on approach which has allowed me to apply theory to real-world projects and develop skills such as creativity, analytical thinking and technical expertise that will be invaluable in my future career.
Whilst I have grown professionally, I also feel this internship has allowed me to grow personally. I have developed my time management through balancing various tasks from various team members, whilst ensuring all tasks were completed to my best ability. Through taking responsibility and the lead on various projects my confidence in my abilities has been enhanced.
Further, I am more confident in voicing my opinion, even when this is different from the rest of the team. I found that when I voiced an opinion that differed from a team member, this was received well and I was encouraged to continue to do so in the future. This highlighted to me how supportive an environment RCPE is and that a different opinion is often appreciated. Finally, working on different projects with different team members has honed my collaboration skills, proving coming together on a project where different skills and perspectives can be leveraged can produce the best result possible.
I am thankful to all colleagues at RCPE for their support and warm welcome. I am especially thankful to the marketing team – Alex, Alice, Tani, and Russell – who have each taught me so much and helped me grow both professionally and personally. Their guidance and expertise have been instrumental in shaping my skills and confidence throughout this internship, equipping me with invaluable skills for my future career.
