Volume 44: Issue 1: 2014

Our first issue of 2014 covers topics from the demise of therapeutic bloodletting to the responsible management of drivers who have physical disabilities or show early signs of dementia, affecting their safety on the roads. I wish to draw the attention of all readers, whether old or young, to an editorial from former president, Professor Michael Oliver, illustrating the merits of ‘wondering’. When did you last examine established facts and just ‘wonder’ what might explain them? Has Google searching replaced deep thinking?

Dr Taimur Durrani

I am an internal medicine trainee in the North East of England. I am about to start my final year in training and plan to enter cardiology specialty training. During my medical training I joined my university’s research forum where engagement in research was encouraged. I learnt how to write literature reviews and carry out original research, through this I have mentored junior medical students to enable them to carry out research. I have attended courses that have improved my teaching skills and how to use feedback constructively.
