He assumed the title of Duke of Argyll in April 1847. Argyll held various positions in Government including Secretary of State for India from 1868-1874.       Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro of Novar was born in London on 13 February 1797. He became head of the Munros of Novar in 1809. He was a notable art collector and major patron of J. M. W. Turner, travelling with him in Europe in 1836 and acting as one of his executors. He never married although fathered several children and died at Novar House on 22 November 1864.

      General John Munro, 9th of Tianinich (also known as Teaninich) was born in June 1778, educated at Fortrose Academy and joined the army. He was sent to Madras and was appointed Quartermaster-General of the Madras Army at 27. He retired at the rank of Major-General and was resident at Tianinich from 1831. He married Charlotte Blacker on 8 December 1808 and they had six children. He died in Inverness in January 1858.
