QUERIES
1. How many Medical Men practice within the Parish of Uig-?
1 None residing within 30 miles of this parish.
2. The Names and Addresses of these.
There are only two Medical men in the whole Island with a population of about 20.000. They reside both in the Town of Stornoway. Addresses Roderick Miller Esq. & Charles McRae Esqr.
3. Has the number increased or diminished of late years?
[no text]
4. Have any left the Parish since you became connected with it? If so, for what reasons?
[no text]
5. Is there any complaint among the people of inadequacy in the supply of Medical aid?
It is extremely melancholy to think of the state of the people in this respect.
6. Do you know of any cases of protracted suffering, or of injury by Accident, such as might have been alleviated had proper advice been at hand?
There are several such cases and must frequently occur while this is the case.
7. To what extent is the deficiency of qualified Practitioners made up by the efforts of other parties?
We endeavour to keep a little stock of plain medicines always on hand for the people. A supply of these wd be great boon in the meantime.
8. Does your experience enable you to suggest any measure – of general applicability – such as would be likely to relieve to some extent the evils (if they exist) of deficiency in the supply of Medical aid?
It is very difficult to suggest any measure. The people are extremely poor and can give nothing in the way of support for a medical man.
9. What Heritors1 are resident, either generally or occasionally, in your Parish?
James Matheson Esqr. M. P. is the only Proprietor of this Island. and Resides here for some months annually & is here at present.
