Two
2. The Names and Addresses of these. X2
Dr. Howie Ardsheilach, Salen, by Strontian
Dr. John MLachlan Salen by Strontian
3. Has the number increased or diminished of late years?
Neither increased nor diminished, (if the services of a Dr. Scott who resided for a short time in the district be not taken into the account)
4. Have any left the Parish since you became connected with it? If so, for what reasons?
None, but the above named Dr. Scott & so far as I know he was only on a visit to his wifes’ relations
5. Is there any complaint among the people of inadequacy in the supply of Medical aid?
None made to me
6. Do you know of any cases of protracted suffering, or of injury by Accident, such as might have been alleviated had proper advice been at hand?
I do not
7. To what extent is the deficiency of qualified Practitioners made up by the efforts of other parties?
Mrs Robertson of Kinlochmoidart is kind in giving advice and medicines to those poor persons who may apply to her
8. Does your experience enable you to suggest any measure – of general applicability – such as would be likely to relieve to some extent the evils (if they exist) of deficiency in the supply of Medical aid?
I do not think there is any “evil from the deficiency of medical aid” but I think there is much evil in the inadequate pay given to medical Gentlemen and to remedy this the Parish of Ardnamurchen ought perhaps to have availed themselves of the Government aid.
9. What Heritors1 are resident, either generally or occasionally, in your Parish?
Sir James Milles Riddell, Bail, Strontian
Alexander MDonald Esqr of Lochshiel
William Robertson Esqr of Kinlochmoidart
[[Additional Text]]
X2 P. S. I ought perhaps have named, as he occasionally practises, Dr. MDonald, Lochshiel, Salen, Strontian.
Robert Stewart
Explanatory notes:
1. A heritor was a landowner, under Scots Law, whose holdings were sizeable enough for them to be liable for the payment of public burdens such as Poor Law rates, road and bridge assessments and the church minister’s stipend.
2. Further response to query 2 written at end of survey.
