QUERIES
1. How many Medical Men practice within the Parish of District of Quarff & Burra - ?
None
2. The Names and Addresses of these.
[no text]
3. Has the number increased or diminished of late years?
[no text]
4. Have any left the Parish since you became connected with it? If so, for what reasons?
No medical man ever was resident in this Parish –
5. Is there any complaint among the people of inadequacy in the supply of Medical aid?
Quarff is distant about 6 miles from Lerwick where at present there is only one medical man, & occasionally cases do or may occur where his aid would be necessary but of which the people have not the means of availing themselves
6. Do you know of any cases of protracted suffering, or of injury by Accident, such as might have been alleviated had proper advice been at hand?
During my time no such case has [1 word illegible] to here –
7. To what extent is the deficiency of qualified Practitioners made up by the efforts of other parties?
Medicines are gratuitously dispensed from the Manse to some extent as occasion may require -
8. Does your experience enable you to suggest any measure – of general applicability – such as would be likely to relieve to some extent the evils (if they exist) of deficiency in the supply of Medical aid?
Were a qualified Practitioner resident in the village of Scalloway distant from hence about 3 miles. I would consider such a person highly useful not only here but to the surrounding Parishes of Tingwall, Whiteness, Wiesdale1, Sandsting and Walls – as well as to the southern parishes of Dunrossness & Sandwick in all of which localities there is no qualified Practitioner
9. What Heritors2 are resident, either generally or occasionally, in your Parish?
None whatever during my Incumbency –
