Commenting upon the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties in Scotland’s report, ‘Learning from Serious Failings in Care’, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“The RCPE welcomes today’s report from the Scottish Academy.  It is a valuable piece of work to help us learn from failings in care of the past and work towards ensuring that they do not reoccur in the future.

"Importantly, we must ensure staff have time to care and engender a culture that values quality and compassion. Safe staffing levels across all disciplines are essential with adequate time allocated for training. Equally, we must have clear systems in place that ensure all staff and patients are empowered to raise concerns over standards of care.

“We have a collective responsibility; doctors, patients, all NHS staff and managers must work together to ensure that our NHS is the best it can be and break this cycle of failings in patient care."
