Biography

Michael Oliver was a cardiologist who founded the department of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He published some 350 papers on a range of subjects including the design and creation of a dedicated coronary care unit, as can be found today in every general hospital. Oliver, along with biochemist George Boyd, also demonstrated a relationship between cholesterol and coronary art disease. He was Duke of Edinburgh professor of cardiology from 1978 to 1989, president of the British Cardiac Society from 1980 to 1984 and president of the College from 1985 to 1988.
