This brilliant doctor distinguished herself in several specialties. As a student in Edinburgh she gained almost all the prizes open to undergraduates and graduated with First Class Honours in 1945, then progressed to MRCP Edin. only two years later. By 1948 she was first a Research Assistant in the Edinburgh Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (under Prof. R J Kellar ) but soon became a Junior Lecturer researching cardiac output and blood viscosity in pregnancy. It was at this time that her interest in Family Planning was born.
Her CV does not tell us where she worked between 1952-62 but between 1962-65 she was a part-time GP in High Wycombe, England. She then began her early career in Family Planning, as deputy Director of the Family Planning Association, London until the end of 1969. During that time she not only published several papers on aspects of Family Planning but oversaw 821 clinics in the UK with their 1000 doctors. During 1967 alone she trained 305 doctors and 700 nurses in Family Planning. Her research at that time centred on oral contraceptives, long term trials of intra-uterine devices and low dose progesterone oral contraceptives.
At that point her career changed yet again when from 1970 to 1979 she was a Research Fellow in Rheumatology at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, her papers at that time on penicillamine in Rheumatoid Arthritis. Following this she was a Rheumatologist in Oban on the West Coast of Scotland until her retirement.
Predictably she was often invited to lecture around the world and offer advice, particularly on Family Planning matters and professional training but her life was more than Medicine. Between 1984 and 1986 she had researched and published on her hobby – gardening especially of Alpine Rock plants
