The College is delighted to announce that Dr Conor Maguire has become our first International Vice-President. He was announced during the College’s annual St Andrew's Day Symposium on 29 November.

International Vice-President is an exciting new role which reinforces the College’s ambition to expand our international Fellowship and maintain our international focus.

Dr Maguire is a Consultant Physician at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh (NHS Lothian). He has been heavily involved in College life, serving as Director of Education since 2015, where among other things he has pioneered the College’s annual Acute and General Medicine Course, and is the Chair of the International Course in Medicine of the Older Adult.

Dr Maguire obtained his medical qualification from University College Dublin. He did his initial postgraduate training and research in Ireland, with a subspecialty and research interest in Parkinson’s disease and cognitive dysfunction. He was awarded an MD from Trinity College Dublin for a thesis on Neurobiological Markers of Dementia.

From 1997 to 2001, Dr Maguire was Lecturer in Care of the Elderly at the University of Bristol and Frenchay Hospital Bristol before moving to Edinburgh in 2001 to take up his present post as a Consultant in NHS Lothian. Since his appointment, he has developed a service for people with Parkinson’s in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Dr Maguire is Chairman of the Lothian Parkinson’s Service Advisory Group, the local Stakeholder Group, and is the Regional Lead for the UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network.

Commenting on becoming International Vice-President, Dr Maguire said:

I am greatly honoured to have been elected to this role. Our College is truly an International College of Physicians and I am committed to supporting our Fellows and Members around the world in their education and training. I will ensure that we continue to develop as an inclusive and diverse organisation. We have a dedicated network of Overseas Regional Advisers (OSRA) around the world, and I look forward to working with them to ensure that we remain fully relevant in a global context.

College President, Professor Derek Bell OBE said:

I’d like to congratulate Dr Maguire on becoming College’s first International Vice-President. Conor has been a committed Fellow for a number of years and has achieved much in his role as Director of Education at the College. He joins our current Vice-Presidents, Dr Sue Pound and Professor Sunil Bhandari to form a strong team of VPs. I would like to also thank Dr Tom Mackay, who recently stood down as Vice-President, for his hard work and commitment. And I’m pleased that he will remain active at the College as Elected Member on Council for Lothian, Borders, Fife.
