NHS Fife Geriatrician, Dr Sue Pound, has been elected as Vice President of the College. Sue is the first woman to be elected to the role, and is delighted to have this privilege.
Sue graduated from Edinburgh University in 1986, and trained in general and elderly medicine. She was appointed as Consultant Physician and Geriatrician in NHS Fife in 1996 and has worked there ever since, remaining fully active as a clinician in a busy district general hospital. Sue has always been committed to the provision of high quality patient care, and ongoing service redesign. NHS Fife has been recognised nationally for being at the forefront of developments such as Hospital at Home and Front Door Frailty services, and Sue has worked enthusiastically with her colleagues to deliver this. Her other major interest is in education and training, undertaking roles such as training programme director and curriculum lead, as well as educational supervision. This has led to many thoroughly enjoyable interactions with trainees.
Speaking after her election as Vice President, Sue said:
“It’s a great honour to be elected as Vice President of this prestigious organisation. The College’s ambition to support our Fellows and Members across the UK and the world in achieving the gold standard across medical training, education and practice, is something I look forward to promoting.
“This is a challenging time for clinical practice, and for the wider NHS, and I look forward to working to help overcome some of the biggest challenges - from our ageing population to pressure on staff and financial constraints. So to be elected by my peers to a Vice President position where I can positively influence these, and other challenges, makes me immensely proud.”
