As of October 2024, the Scottish Parliament’s Health, Social Care & Sport Committee is continuing its Stage 1 scrutiny of the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill by taking oral evidence. Details of the Committee’s work schedule for this are here

The College responded to the Committee’s call for views in the summer emphasising that we have no organisational position – and never have had - on the issue. To inform our response we emailed a questionnaire - based verbatim on the questions in the Committee’s consultation - to all 526 active Fellows in Scotland and I am grateful to the 93 Fellows (18%) who responded. The answers of those 93 Fellows can be found in the attachment. Fellows offered a range of additional free text comments about the Bill which we provided to the Committee in full. We will continue to monitor the Committee’s work ahead of the publication of its Stage 1 report and the Stage 1 debate which will follow. Fellows and Members can of course still express their own views on the Bill directly to their MSPs.
