Ian Paterson

Biography

Dr Ian Paterson (born 1914, Edinburgh) was a Consultant Surgeon in Fife from 1948 to 1980. In the army, he had the rank of Major. When remembering the war, he notes ‘it was astounding how the war passed you by’. Paterson graduated from Medical School in Edinburgh in 1938 after which he worked in Surrey as a House Surgeon. He continued his work in Bristol in the Orthopaedic department which he thoroughly enjoyed. He described his unit there as happy and his chief as ‘an excellent teacher and a wonderful enthusiast’. Paterson continued to work in Orthopaedic departments across Britain.
