Alex Proudfoot
Biography
Dr Alex Proudfoot (born 1937, Fife) was the first member of his family to go to university and pursue medicine. Proudfoot recalls the mining community in Fife he experienced in his childhood in which his father, grandfather and uncle worked in along with most in the village. He claims ‘exams and [he] never got on well’ but he stayed to complete his qualifications and was accepted into The University of Edinburgh. Proudfoot established the world’s first computerised system for providing information about poison management (TOXBASE) which is now the basis of the UK’s poison information services and is used globally.
