This distinguished Iraqi physician and cardiologist was born in 1922, studied medicine in the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, qualifying in 1950. He then did post graduate training at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts before returning home to establish what soon became a thriving and highly respected private practice in Basra, Iraq.

When the new medical school was started there he was invited to become a founder member, establishing a successful department and nurturing links with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh of which he became a Fellow in 1979. On his retirement from the university he continued in private practice, always keeping himself abreast of developments in cardiology.

He was admired as a clinician, a teacher and a friend to many. He leaves a wife, Nada, three children and three grandchildren.
