Commenting on the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) review published today, Inspiring Change: a review of the quality of care provided to patients receiving acute non-invasive ventilation, Dr Tom Mackay, Vice President, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and consultant respiratory physician said:

“We welcome NCEPOD’s focus on improving the quality of care for patients. The review highlighted that there is currently wide variation in both the organisation of NIV services and the clinical care provided.

“Ensuring that patients are treated in the most appropriate setting with the appropriate equipment, at the right time, and cared for by the right person with adequate resources is vital to improve our patients’ journeys through the health service. Issues such as staffing levels, ongoing audit, planned service development and ensuring that staff have the time to provide the appropriate care for patients remain high on the College agenda.

“The recommendations made in today’s report are timely and the College looks forward to working with NCEPOD and colleagues across the NHS to improve outcomes for patients receiving acute NIV”.
